Compassion as a Family

Compassion as a Family

The Bennett Foundation

The Bennett Foundation’s mission is to improve the health and well-being of children and their families. A big part of our families’ well-being is our commitment to compassion. With this post we wanted to emphasis the importance of compassion, but then also give some practical examples of how your family can live it out!

Talk about the importance of giving. The first, and possibly simplest step, is speaking with your family about why we should give to others that are in need. Discuss how some people need help and the importance of being there for people in their communities. When your family is together in the car, sitting around the table, or going for a walk, share with them how you find it important and ask for their feedback!

Share stories of charitable people you admire. Everybody loves a good superhero story. Share with your family a few people that you look up to that do admirable work in their communities. This could be range anywhere from volunteers at your kids’ school to superheroes on the big screen. Let your family be creative and pick some of their favorites, and ask them what they can do to be more like their heroes!

Spring clean. Grab a cardboard box and encourage your family to go through their things and see if there is anything they would like to donate! It could be clothes they have outgrown, toys they don’t play with anymore, or some cleats that only have a season of use! Take these items and donate them to a thrift store and explain to the family about how donated goods can make it easier for some families to afford things for their kids!

Volunteer together as a family. Look for ways that your family can go out and help their communities. See if the animal shelter allows volunteers to walk dogs. Check if the food bank needs help sorting donations. Maybe there is a community event going on that raises money for a charity. Go for a walk through the park with a trash bag and some rubber gloves and pick up any trash you see. There are lots of things you can do to help! See what your family is passionate about and have some quality-time together going out a serving others!
