The Bennett Foundation Delivers Supplies to Houston Hurricane Victims
On Wednesday, September 13th, delivery trucks arrived at Taylor High School, in Houston, Texas, loaded with critical relief items for families impacted by Hurricane Harvey. Located in the Houston suburbs, it was the first of two schools that The Bennett Foundation made deliveries to this past week—the same school that Michael and Martellus Bennett attended as teenagers. The second delivery arrived at Holub Middle School on Wednesday, September 20th; a second access point for community members who have been affected by the storm.
It is the generous donations from friends, fans, and supporters of the The Bennett Foundation, as well as contributions from The Seattle Seahawks, Safeway, Costco, Albertson’s, and Randalls, that helped The Bennett Foundation purchase supplies and make these deliveries possible.
“We are so moved and so touched,” said Michael’s mother Pennie Bennett, who helped coordinate the deliveries. Pennie, who works for the Alief ISD (Independent School District), and Michael Bennett Sr. are Alief locals and have seen firsthand the impact Hurricane Harvey has had on the community. After the storm, approximately 300 hundred families took refuge in the Taylor High School gym, and many community members are struggling to get access to day-to-day necessities like diapers, which have been scarce since the storm hit.
On delivery day, students from both schools showed up to help unload supplies from the trucks. The Taylor High School varsity football team arrived in their practice gear and pumped up the group with an energetic cheer. Hundreds of cases of bottled water, along with canned and non-perishable food items such as corn, beans, rice, mac n’ cheese, peanut butter, and apple juice, were carried off the trucks and organized in a makeshift pantry inside the school. Home goods, including school supplies and baby products, were also among the cargo.
Families will be able to request the items they need from a list of the donated inventory, which volunteers will bag up and distribute this week and next.
Thank you to the amazing donors and supporters of The Bennett Foundation! It is because of you that we have been able to make this impact and help alleviate the effects that Hurricane Harvey has had on the Alief community in Houston.
